JIM RICHARDS VOTED 'THE GREATEST KIWI TOURING CAR DRIVER OF ALL-TIME'
7 NOVEMBER 2012
Gentleman Jim Richards has romped away with the Pirtek Poll after Speedcafe.co.nz readers overwhelmingly voted the expat Kiwi the best New Zealand touring car driver of all-time.
The poll attracted almost 800 votes with Richards winning 450 votes or almost 60 per cent of the traffic.
The poll gave readers a chance to vote for nine different drivers with the option of ticking a final box called 'other' if they did not agree with any of the driver options.
Celebrated Kiwi Greg Murphy attracted the second highest amount of votes (135) or 17.7per cent of the votes.
Readers named Paul Radisich, the double Touring Car World Cup champion, the third best with 62 votes or just over eight per cent of the vote.
Top former Super Touring driver and V8 Supercar racer Craig Baird attracted 39 votes while the late Jason Richards was next with 25 votes.
However it was Jim Richards who has won seven Bathurst 1000 titles, two less than Peter Brock's record, and four Australian Touring Car Championships who dominated the poll.
Richards, who migrated to Australia in the mid 1970's, was one of the most naturally gifted touring car racers and has successfully used his talents in many other forms of circuit racing and in tarmac rallies.
