Rally Tasmania

1 March 2011

Richards added yet another trophy to his extensive collection by taking out the 31st Rally Tasmania.
Despite being put back on the calendar at the last minute, Rally Tasmania still attracted 17 cars. However, the tough Tasmanian roads claimed their fair share of cars this year and only nine managed to finish.
It will almost certainly be the last time Richards will drive his 2008 Porsche GT-2 because he is set to debut his new 2011 Porsche GT-2 RS in Targa Tasmania in April.
The rally was savage on a number of competitors including front-runner Tony Quinn. Quinn was forced to retire after stage 16 when his Nissan GTR developed a serious problem. It is the second time in two years that Quinn has been forced out of the event due to a mechanical problem. Quinn extended his lead in the event on the first stage at Calder yesterday to 33 seconds over Richards.
However, he struck trouble at the next stage and was forced to pull out just before the start of stage 17 due to a gearbox problem. That left the door wide open for Richards, who finished more than two minutes ahead of Simon Gillett in a Subaru WRX STI.
